Professor Ragnar Norrby has died 71 years old. Ragnar Norrby trained to be a physician and got his doctorate at the University of Gothenburg. He was also chairman of the Sahlgrenska Academy’s Board for several years .
Ragnar Norrby has a long record as a physician, researcher and teacher. He received his doctorate in 1970 with a thesis on the single-celled parasite Toxoplasma gondii, became a specialist in clinical virology and was in the early 1980s a professor at Umeå University and the chief medical officer for the Västerbotten region hospital.
After moving to Skåne and holding the corresponding position at Lund University, Ragnar Norrby 2000 became Director General of Smittskyddsinstitutet. In 2010 he returned to Gothenburg and became chairman the Academy Board.
– Ragnar was the last chairman who was recruited externally and he did a very good job, says dean Olle Larkö.
Ragnar Norrby had during his career also several prestigious international assignments, including as President of The International Society for Chemotherapy and chair of the board of Trustees of the International Vaccine Institute.
Ragnar Norrby died after a period illness. He leaves his wife Ann-Sofie and her daughters Anna and Catherine and their families.
