Amel Gritli Linde, Docent at the Institute of Odontology and the leader of one of the university’s sharpest research teams, is receiving this year’s Sven and Maud Thuréus Award from the odontology faculty at Umeå University.
“It’s an honor to be recognized by another university at the national level, both for my group and for me myself. I’m pleased that the award recognizes basic research like ours since it emphasizes the importance of basic knowledge in odontology,” says Amel Gritli Linde.
The award, which this year entails SEK 35,000 in prize money, is handed out during festivities in connection with Umeå University’s annual festival in the middle of October. Amel Gritli Linde will then also give a lecture on the team’s research and its significance.
Amel Gritli Linde leads a small, but very productive research team in oral biochemistry. When the university evaluated its research in 2010 with the help of international judges, the team was one of four in total that received the rating “outstanding” and were thereby assessed to belong to the world leaders in their fields. The team works with basic issues about how cell signals control craniofacial and dental development.
“Understanding how cells form tissues and organs is not just fascinating, it’s also crucial to determine thecauses and mechanisms behind diseases and congenital deformities. Currently, one of our goals is to dissect the molecular mechanisms that control cell specification. What is it that causes cells to be programmed to become enamel secreting cells or taste bud cells during development, and not another kind of cell,” Amel Gritli Linde asks herself.
This is not the first time the research team is recognized this way. In 2006, the award went to Professor Anders Linde, who is both Amel Gritli Linde’s research colleague and spouse:
“Anders received this award on his merits, and I am receiving it on mine. Both of us being honored like this is fantastic!”
