The University of Gothenburg’s Preliminary Application Procedure
You can read about the application procedure here: https://gubox.box.com/s/kclh8zet3o616501zlq7turho5xikqfp
Detailed information and a timeline, as well as information in both English and Swedish about how the application documents (synopsis, supporting materials, etc) should be formatted and presented, can be found in the attached document outlining the preliminary application procedure for 2017/2018.
The Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation has a deadline of February 1, 2018 for announcing its decisions regarding the awarding of project grants. The Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation finances research projects of exceptional merit that “benefit the Swedish nation.” Grant amounts are typically between 15 – 60 MSEK per project. The foundation primarily provides funding for research projects in the fields of science, technology, and medicine, but projects that focus on other areas of research can also be awarded grants, provided that they are somehow related to one or more of the aforementioned fields of study.
Applications are evaluated in a two-step process, beginning with the nomination process, which is carried out by the university’s various faculties. Thereafter, the faculties submit their nominations to the vice-chancellor, who evaluates them and then decides which candidates will be permitted to submit a full application to the foundation. Thus, the foundation solely accepts submissions from applicants who have been nominated and put forward by the vice-chancellor.
Guidelines for Synopses
Synopses must be no longer that 2 pages in length, not including attachments. Synopses and any attached documents must be written in English.
The synopsis must include:
- The Scientific issue/question to be addressed, and the potential of the project: Briefly describe the project’s central scientific issue/problem/goal and the scientific potential of the intended research. The scientific underpinnings of
the project should be described. - Implementation of the project: Briefly describe the plan for implementing the project, in terms of content as well as time. This section may be combined with Section 1, if you so choose.
- Research infrastructure If the scientific activity to be carried out in the course of the project is directly associated with any research infrastructure, this should be evident in the synopsis. Please state whether the infrastructure is already in place or whether new investments will be required to implement the project, as well where the intended infrastructure will be/is currently located. In drafting your project’s budget, you may also apply for funding (through write-offs) for necessary infrastructure (be it currently in existence or merely planned).
Attachments to be submitted with the synopsis:
- Description of the research team that will carry out the project: Please clearly indicate who is the primary applicant for the grant. The list of participating persons should include:
- Name
- University
- Role in the project (brief description)
- A short CV for each of the people on the team, including bibliometric data
- A tentative budget including the following items:
- A year-by-year breakdown of the total grant amount for which you are applying. PLEASE NOTE: The average project duration is 3-5 years, and the average project budget is 15-60 MSEK.
- An approximate overview of the distribution of funds between participating research constellations/universities
- Approximately how the funds are to be distributed across personnel costs, operational costs, write-offs (e.g. infrastructure), and other costs (e.g. open access publishing)
GUIDING PRINCIPLES THAT SHOULD FORM THE BASIS FOR THE NOMINATION:
- New area of research
- Cross-border character
- Addresses a distinct, coherent scientific issue/question.
IMPORTANT DATES IN THE UPCOMING CALL FOR PROPOSALS:
- September 19, 2017: The last day that faculties may submit nominations to the Grants and Innovation Office.
- November 3, 2017: The vice-chancellor announces her decision regarding which candidates may submit full applications to KAW.
- January 30, 2018: Submission of the University of Gothenburg’s grant applications to KAW
All questions regarding the application and nomination procedures (as well as questions about the call for proposals and general inquiries about the foundation) should be addressed to Ulf Nilsson, a research advisor at the Grants and Innovation Office and the University of Gothenburg’s contact person for the Wallenberg foundations.
